NATO Headquarters Skopje was created in April 2002 by the amalgamation of two Headquarters: KFOR REAR and AMBER FOX.
 
The mission is to advise the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia Government Authorities on military aspects of Security Sector Reform in order to contribute to further Euro-Atlantic Integration and provide support to NATO-led operations within the Balkans Joint Area of Operations.
 
NHQS is a non-tactical HQ and consists of about 20 personnel, military and civilian located in the HN MoD.
NATO has an enduring commitment to the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

As your country has continued to progress on the path towards NATO, our Headquarters in Skopje has continued to transform according to the needs of the country. In 2007, we significantly reduced our size and now we focus on defense reform.
Each national authorities are first line responders for in-country security, however all efforts to minimize casualties and ensure that no more than proportional force is used to apprehend criminals is welcome.

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen visited today the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia¹, where he expressed strong support to the country's further Euro-atlantic integration.
NATO Advisory Team visits 1st Brigade located in Stip 14 June 2010

Chief of the NATO Advisory Team (NAT) and the Interoperability Advisor visited the 1st Mechanized Infantry Brigade Headquarter located in Stip. The purpose of the visit was to deepen the NAT knowledge on one of the key operational elements of the Armed Forces, and to tighten the links with the Stip Command, to provide better support for the challenging activities the Brigade is currently undertaking.

NATO Headquarters Skopje held a team building mountaineering exercise up Vodno mountain near Skopje May 28. According to Brigadier David Humar, NHQS commander, hiking up a mountain with members of many nations can be a lot of fun, but also provides opportunities to discuss many matters concerning different cultures thus enhancing working relationships.
