NAPLES, Italy – Dr. Elisabeth Kendall, a senior research fellow in Arabic and Islamic studies at Pembroke College, University of Oxford, visited Allied Joint Force Command Naples, Dec. 15.

Kendall works on the intersections between cultural and political/militant movements in the contemporary Middle East. Her current interests are in jihadist propaganda through poetry, tribal representation and youth politics in eastern Yemen, and the surge of cultural production inspired by the Arab spring, particularly in Egypt.

During her visit, Kendall addressed the staff of JFC Naples on her work in Yemen, also drawing parallels to insurgencies in other countries in the Middle East and Northern Africa region, or MENA.

Her briefing and discussions with sections served to enhance the situational understanding of the JFC Naples staff on the MENA region.

According to military partnership staff members at JFC Naples, these kinds of educational activities fit in a larger program designed by the section to reach out to academia and keep pace with contemporary thinking on areas of interest to the headquarters.

Kendall has previously published books on Arabic literature and language, and she conducts field work on insurgent groups. More information can be found at http://blog.politics.ox.ac.uk/author/elisabeth-kendall/.
